When Joy had showered and changed her clothes, she stepped out of her room to run into Travon sprinting down the hall. She caught her little man up in her arms and kissed him until he squirmed. She clutched his hand as they strolled toward the stairs.

“Ma, can Keane take us in his boat today?” Travon asked.

Joy chuckled. “It’s not for me to give permission on using his boat. He has to want that, baby. I’d rather steer clear of Keane. And for the millionth time, boy, stop bugging him so much. Give Keane and Nolan a break sometimes.”

Her son’s face fell. “Aw, but they’re fun, and Keane’s boat is tight.”

“Boy, what do you know about ‘tight’?” She shook her head, laughing.

Voices at the bottom of the steps caught her attention, and Joy looked down over the banister to find the entry way crowded with people. She paused. Keane had said something about a yearly party, but somehow she hadn’t thought of the guests coming here. Silly her.

The house was monstrous and could easily sleep every one of the people below.

She hesitated about going down until Keane looked up in the act of greeting his guests and caught her eye. She couldn’t run back to her room. While Joy watched, a beautiful woman with thick wavy black hair and a friendly smile on her face walked up to Keane. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed his lips.

Joy took a step back, but Keane pushed the woman back gently and looked to Joy again. His expression said she’d better come down before he dragged her down. She wouldn’t be embarrassed in front of his guests, so she took a deep breath, tightened her hold on Travon’s hand and descended the stairs.

At the bottom of the stairs, Keane pulled Joy to his side, and Travon worked himself loose to stand ahead of them. The woman took a step back, her eyes wide. “Did I miss something, Keane? Did you get married and have a child and never told me?”

He grimaced. Joy tried pulling away and thought she’d drop through the floor when Travon chose that moment to revert to an infant and lift his arms for Keane to pick him up.

Everyone froze. Keane didn’t respond to the question or to Travon’s outstretched arms. Joy wanted to slap his cruel ass.

Nolan rushed over, took Travon and tossed him playfully on his back, muttering something about being starved for breakfast. Joy cast a longing look at their backs wishing she could join them, but Keane kept her close.

He decided to speak at last. “No, I didn’t. This is Joy, and her son is Travon.” He left the explanation at that.

The woman turned a friendly smile on Joy and hooked an arm through her arm. “Great to meet you, Joy. I’m Gloria, an old family friend. I’m so glad there’s another young woman at this party. Last year . . . Never mind. It doesn’t bare remembering.” She tugged Joy from Keane’s hold, and he let go.
